Should people answer work emails after hours?
The thread explores whether people should answer work emails after hours. Most responses describe compulsive checking driven by anxiety, habit, or perceived employer expectations - acknowledging the behavior harms wellbeing but feeling unable to stop. One key counterpoint argues that actual job requirements are rare and boundaries are more viable than assumed. A newer perspective introduces industry-specific competitive pressure as a legitimizing factor, suggesting some fields require after-hours availability to remain competitive.

This is honestly the biggest con of working remotely. My company doesn't explicitly require after-hours emails, but the culture is definitely 'always on,' so there's this unspoken pressure. I've started leaving my work phone in another room after 6 PM just to force myself to disconnect.

My industry's crazy fast-paced, so yeah, everyone's checking emails at night. That's just the reality. Do I wish it were different? Sure. But complaining about it isn't going to change the fact that my competitors are also working at 10 PM, and I can't afford to fall behind.

The real question is whether your job actually needs it or whether you just think it does. I learned the hard way that most things don't require a 9 PM response. Now I check once before bed out of habit, but I'd be fine without it.

Honestly, I'm addicted to it at this point. It's become such a habit that I don't even realize I'm doing it until my partner yells at me for checking Slack at dinner. Kind of pathetic when you think about it, but changing it feels impossible.

Yeah, I do, but I probably shouldn't. My boss has this thing where he expects immediate responses even on weekends, and I've never been good at setting boundaries. It's honestly killing my work-life balance, but the anxiety of not replying is somehow worse than just checking my phone every five minutes.
