What family habits or behaviors did you think were normal that turned out to be unusual?
Responses explore family-specific norms that felt universal within the household but proved unusual elsewhere. Examples range from mandatory phone-free dinners and shared morning songs to debate-heavy meals and strict shoe policies. The thread emphasizes how these practices only become visible as 'unusual' through external comparison, and often gain appreciation in retrospect despite childhood resistance.

Okay so my family's thing was arguing about literally everything at dinner - politics, religion, whether pineapple belongs on pizza, you name it. My spouse thought we were all angry with each other constantly, but we were just... vibing? Debate culture was just how we showed we cared enough to engage. Definitely not normal everywhere, and I had to learn that other people find that stressful instead of fun.

We thought it was standard to have a specific song we'd sing together every morning before school - still don't know why, my parents just started doing it one day and it stuck for years. Pretty weird in hindsight, but it's one of my favorite childhood memories and honestly nothing beats the bizarre stuff families come up with that bonds them together.

We'd take our shoes off the second we walked in the door, always. No exceptions. Found out in college that a lot of people just... keep their shoes on inside? The whole thing seemed insane to me at first, but I get it - different families, different norms. Can't really say one way is 'normal' when normal's just whatever you grew up with.

My parents made us eat dinner together every single night, no phones, no TV - just talking for like an hour. Thought everyone did that until I stayed at a friend's house and they were all just kind of... doing their own thing in different rooms. Turns out that's actually pretty unusual, and honestly? I'm grateful for it now, even though I complained constantly back then.
