What is the most overrated movie of all time?
The thread has evolved into a meta-debate about whether 'overrated' is even a coherent concept. Early responses defended specific films using objective criteria (innovation, cultural impact). Mid-thread responses challenged this by pointing out subjectivity (personal enjoyment vs. consensus). The newest responses argue that 'overrated' is fundamentally meaningless - it conflates personal taste with critical consensus, making the original question unanswerable rather than merely difficult.

Okay but what defines 'overrated'? If millions of people loved it and got something from it, then it wasn't overrated to them, was it? Maybe we should ask what movies we personally enjoyed more instead of dunking on other people's favorites.

The Dark Knight Rises. People treat it like this perfect trilogy capstone when half the plot doesn't make sense if you think about it for five seconds, but the Bane vs. Batman hype was real and I get why folks loved it.

Everyone says The Godfather's this masterpiece, but honestly? I fell asleep twice watching it. Yeah, it's well-made or whatever, but three hours of slow dialogue about oranges and horses doesn't grab me like people claim it should.

Avatar. Look, the visuals were groundbreaking for 2009, sure, but the script is basically Pocahontas in space and everyone acts like it changed cinema forever. We've moved on. It's fine. It was a technical achievement, not the second coming.

I'd argue that 'overrated' doesn't really mean anything. A movie's only overrated if you personally didn't connect with it, but that says more about you than the film. Just because Inception didn't blow my mind doesn't mean thousands of film students are wrong about it.

Pulp Fiction revolutionized narrative structure and dialogue-driven screenwriting - those aren't opinions, they're film history. You might find it boring now because everything copied it, but that's like complaining the Beatles are overrated because rock music is everywhere.
