What is the most useless job that exists?

Respond to this question
The thread examines jobs perceived as pointless, with responses oscillating between practical examples (telemarketing, social media management) and philosophical pushback. Early responses cite specific negative experiences or market inefficiency; a newer response challenges the premise itself, arguing that 'uselessness' is a capitalist framework that obscures the actual social value of work.

The concept of 'useless' is kind of capitalist nonsense when you think about it. We've decided some jobs are worthless based purely on what profit they generate, but that doesn't mean they're actually meaningless or that society wouldn't be worse without them.

Telemarketing, no contest. I did it for three months in college and it was soul-crushing for everyone involved. We were literally paid to interrupt people's dinners and read scripts nobody wanted to hear. The company made money, sure, but at what cost to human dignity?

Honestly, professional social media managers for small businesses feel pretty pointless to me. Like, posting three times a week to your company's Instagram isn't creating value - it's just noise that nobody's scrolling to see anyway.
